Why Your Website Isn’t Showing Up on Google, and How to Fix It

5 November 20266 min readDiamond Group

The site is live, you’ve sent the link to friends, but when you type your company name into Google, something else comes up. Or the site appears only when someone types your exact name, not what you actually sell. It happens more often than you’d think, and there’s almost always a clear reason.

Below are the things we check first. You can look at most of them yourself, no developer needed.

First: does Google know your site exists?

Open Google and type site:yourdomain.com, with your own address. If nothing comes up, Google hasn’t added your site to its index yet. If you do see results but nobody finds you for the words that matter, the problem is somewhere else: content, competition or trust.

1. The site is brand new

Google needs time with a new site. Sometimes a few days, sometimes several weeks. You can speed it up: add the site to Google Search Console and submit your sitemap. It’s free, and it shows you which pages Google has added, which it hasn’t, and why.

2. The site is asking Google not to show it

We see this surprisingly often. During development someone switches on a setting that tells search engines to stay away. After launch, nobody switches it off. Technically it’s a noindex tag in the page code or a block in robots.txt. The site works, customers can open it, but Google skips it on purpose.

In the Pages report in Search Console, these addresses show up as excluded, with the reason next to them. If you see noindex there, it’s a few minutes to fix.

3. Google doesn’t know where you are

When people search for a service plus a city, say “dentist in Riga”, a big part of the results comes from Google Maps. The businesses that show up there have a filled-in Google Business Profile. If you don’t have one, or it’s half empty, you’re simply not on that list. Add your address, opening hours, services and real photos, and ask happy customers to leave a review.

4. Your site doesn’t use the words people search for

Companies often describe themselves the way they talk internally: “innovative solutions”, “a complex approach”. Customers don’t type that into Google. They type “accountant for a small business” or “how much does window replacement cost”. If those words aren’t on your site, Google has no reason to show you.

A quick test: write down five questions customers ask you on the phone. Does your site answer them clearly? If not, those are your next sections.

5. Everything is crammed onto one page

If you offer five services but list them all on one page with a couple of sentences each, it’s hard for Google to tell what that page is about. Every important service deserves its own page, with its own heading, description, price or pricing logic, and common questions. It’s easier for customers too, because they land exactly where they need to be.

6. It’s slow or awkward on a phone

Most of your customers will probably open your site on a phone. If it loads slowly, the text is tiny or buttons jump around, people go back to the search results and pick someone else. Heavy images and too many add-ons are the usual culprits. You can test your speed for free with Google PageSpeed Insights.

7. Nobody links to you

Google trusts sites that other sites point to. If there’s no mention of your company in directories, on partner sites or in local media, you’re up against competitors who have those mentions. Start with the easy ones: business directories, industry associations, and the suppliers and partners you already work with.
